How to estimate an electricity bill
Energy charges are calculated from your monthly use and entered rate. The calculator then adds monthly fixed charges and optional tax to show an approximate total in US dollars.
Formula: monthly estimate = (kWh × rate in cents ÷ 100) + fixed charges + estimated tax. Tax is applied to energy charges and fixed charges entered above.
For an easy starting point, the US Energy Information Administration reports that residential electric-utility customers purchased an average of about 899 kWh per month in 2022. The rate field starts with a clearly labeled example value; replace it with the rate on your own bill.
US electricity bill calculator FAQs
Where do I find my electricity rate?
Look for your energy or supply charge per kWh on your electric bill. If your provider separates supply and delivery rates, use a representative combined rate for a closer estimate and enter fixed monthly charges separately.
Does the state selector use state-average prices?
No. Rates differ by utility, plan and billing period, so the calculator does not guess a state tariff. Use the state field as optional context and enter the price shown on your own bill.
Why doesn't the estimate match my bill exactly?
Your actual bill may include tiered or time-of-use pricing, utility riders, delivery fees, credits, taxes or a different number of billing days. This tool applies the inputs you provide to a simple monthly estimate.
Can I share my estimate?
Yes. Choose “Share estimate” to open your device's share sheet or copy a link with the estimate inputs, so someone else can open the same calculation.
